Tenormin is a prescribed medication that helps lower blood pressure (hypertension), alleviates symptoms of angina, and enhances survival rates following a heart attack. It may also be used for alternative purposes, such as treating migraines or anxiety, in an "off-label" manner.
Tenormin belongs to a group of drugs known as beta-adrenergic blocking agents, commonly referred to as beta blockers. This medication specifically targets and blocks beta-1 receptors. By doing so, it counters the effects of stress hormones like adrenaline (epinephrine), resulting in a decrease in heart rate, both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and the workload of the heart, which allows the heart to operate with less oxygen and blood.
Tenormin functions as a beta-adrenergic blocking agent by inhibiting the action of the sympathetic nervous system, which is part of the involuntary nervous system. This system typically increases heart rate; by blocking its effects, Tenormin helps lower the heart rate, making it effective for treating abnormal rapid heart rhythms. Additionally, it lessens the strength of heart muscle contractions and reduces blood pressure. By lowering both the heart rate and contraction strength, Tenormin decreases the oxygen demand of heart muscle. Given that angina arises when the heart's oxygen demand surpasses its supply, Tenormin is beneficial for managing angina.
Continue using this medication even if you feel fine. Ensure you do not miss any doses. If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, provided it's more than 8 hours before your next scheduled dose. If it's less than 8 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your usual dosing routine. Do not take two doses at the same time.
